If you are like most people you have been hearing about global warming for the past several years. To make matters worse most of what you have been hearing has been couched in scientific mumbo jumbo that is difficult if not impossible to understand and what little you could understand seemed to be conflicting theories as to whether or not global warming is really occurring and if it is what really causes it. Don't feel bad about your confusion it seems that even scientist are confused about the entire issue.
Does It Really Exist?
There are scientists who say that global warming not only exists but it is a threat to the entire planet and will result in more hurricanes, less food and eventually if not controlled, the death of most living things. There are other scientists who say that there really is no global warming and we have little to worry about as the earth at times gets warmer and then cools off. Then there are those that says that the temperature of the earth is definitely heating up but since the atmosphere has changed little, then what we have is not global warming but simply a need to take measures to cool down the earth by making what scientists consider small changes. But let's say for the sake of argument that global warming does exist. If it does what are the actual causes?
What Really Are the Causes?
There have been several theories provided to account for global warming. These theories have run the gambit from far-fetched arguments such as aliens (those from space not other countries), to cows, to agriculture, to human reliance on fossil fuels, to our increasing population, to the building and maintaining of large cities and everything in between. Even among scientists who agree that global warming is real there seems little consensus as to the causes. Most claim that the addition to CO2 from human actions do play a part as well as cities where sidewalks and buildings increase the temperature in areas as much as 10 or 12 degrees Fahrenheit over less populated places.
What Can We Do?
When scientists can't agree if a problem exists or not and if it does then what is the cause of the problem it is difficult for the average person to know what to do to help the situation. The best we can do is error on the side of caution and assume that global warming might well be taking place and that we humans are contributing to it. If we accept the theory that CO2 emissions is one of leading causes then taking measures to reduce the CO2 in the atmosphere seems like a wise decision. The best way to accomplish this is by encouraging the growth of green plants that takes CO2 from the air and replace it with oxygen. Roof top gardens in large cities would not only help decrease the CO2 but would reduce urban warming. Relying less on fossil fuels would also lower the amount of CO2 in the air and recycling will help as well.
Even if these steps should prove unnecessary for purposes of global warming, they will create a healthier place for all of us to live.
